Frequently Asked Questions — SQL Server India

Per core licensing counts the physical cores on the server (min 4 core licenses) — covers unlimited users. Server + CAL requires a server license plus a Client Access License (CAL) per user or device — economical for small, known user populations. Per core is generally recommended for internet-facing or large user-count environments. Note: SQL Server Enterprise only offers per core licensing.

Yes — SQL Server 2022 Standard supports a 2-node Always On Availability Group with one database per AG. This provides basic HA — if the primary fails, the secondary takes over. However, Standard's secondary replicas are not readable (for reporting offload), which requires Enterprise Edition.

For very large databases (multi-TB) or highly customized SQL Server environments, on-premises may still be preferable.

In-memory OLTP stores tables and procedures in memory-optimized data structures — delivering significant throughput improvement for high-concurrency OLTP workloads (order processing, session state, financial transactions). Available in Enterprise Edition only. Ogma evaluates in-memory suitability for your hot tables before recommending.

SQL Server CUs are applied on a scheduled basis (typically monthly or quarterly) by Ogma's managed DBA team. CUs are first applied to a non-production SQL instance and validated over 48 hours before applying to the Always On secondary, then failing over to patch the primary — minimizing production impact.

SQL Server 2008 and 2012 are End of Life (EOS) — Microsoft no longer provides security patches. Ogma provides best-effort support for these versions under a managed DBA contract but strongly recommends upgrading to SQL Server 2022. Ogma handles SQL Server version upgrades as a project engagement — including application compatibility testing.
